Meaning & symbolism
Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and an editorial Royal / Dragon adaptation for this card.
Upright keywords
Endings · transition · letting go
Upright meaning
An old form of life can no longer continue unchanged. A role, relationship, habit, or cycle must give way to something new. Death represents a consequential transformation, sometimes accompanied by grief, but not reducible to loss. The invitation is to acknowledge a genuine ending so life can move.
Reversed keywords
Clinging · prolonged transition · fear of loss
Reversed meaning
The person may be keeping something alive after its function has ended, or may not have completed the work of saying goodbye. A reversal can also reflect change unfolding slowly in the background. It is not a prediction of physical death.
RWS image & symbols
The armored skeleton rider suggests inevitability; the black flag with a white rose speaks to ending and renewal; the fallen king, priest, woman, and child show that status cannot exempt anyone from change; distant towers and a rising sun suggest passage beyond the ending; water evokes time.
Reader's lens
Do not forecast death or a medical event. Read the imagery as structural change and the need to bring an ending to completion.
Royal / Dragon adaptation
Keep the skeletal rider as a supernatural archetype and replace the white horse with a white dragon. All other human figures become royals of different ages.
