Meaning & symbolism
Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and an editorial Royal / Dragon adaptation for this card.
Upright keywords
Mental entrapment · constrained options · fear
Upright meaning
Blindfolded and bound, a figure stands among eight swords, yet the blades do not form a closed wall. The card portrays feeling trapped when perspective and autonomy are limited. Some barriers are assumptions; others are real conditions that demand outside resources and help.
Reversed keywords
Recognizing a way out, or prolonged self-limitation
Reversed meaning
Someone may begin loosening an old belief or accepting support. Alternatively, self-blame may deepen helplessness. Never use the reversed card to blame a person whose real circumstances restrict their choices.
RWS image & symbols
The blindfold limits perspective; the bindings restrict freedom; eight spaced swords leave potential openings; mud and water underfoot complicate movement; a distant castle suggests power or help still out of reach.
Reader's lens
Which limits are material, which are assumptions, and who can help? Do not tell someone in danger that positive thinking alone will fix it.
Royal / Dragon adaptation
Place a prince or princess among exactly eight swords. Bind both arms plausibly, and do not let a long dress obscure the leg anatomy.
